8:53 pm on 11 August 2005

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Sir Allan Kemakeza, has announced that the "single ballot box" system will be implemented at the national Elections early next year.

The measure was passed in the last Parliamentary session but there had been suggestions that its implementation would be delayed.

Sir Allan says if it is the wish of the people and if the Electoral Commission thinks that there is enough time to promote the new system then it must be implemented at the next poll.

He has called on the Electoral Commission and aid donors to help promote the new system.

Sir Allan is also encouraging all Solomon Islanders who are eligible to vote to make all efforts to understand the single ballot box system now and not wait until the last minute.

The Electoral Commission has welcomed the annnouncement and says it will now begin an awareness campaign.
