French Polynesia's Te Porinetia Ora Party has spoken out against a proposal by President Oscar Temaru to establish a so-called Pacific passport for the free movement of people in the region.
The party, which is led by a former minister of the Flosse-led government, says such a passport would mean the opening of the borders.
The party's vice-president, Teiva Manutahi, has told a news conference that Pacific islanders, such as Tongans, could be hired which would be to the detriment of the young people in French Polynesia.
The party leader, Reynald Temarii, says his party is taking issue with Mr Temaru's recent comments about possible independence.
Mr Temarii says he would like the centrist parties to stop abstaining in the assembly because this gives the ruling coalition a majority.
But he also says he would like the government to last the full term to avoid instability.
