9:03 pm on 16 August 2005

Taiwan has signed an agreement with Kiribati to help it improve medical services.

The Taiwan News reports the deal to facilitate professional medical training and provide better medical care to Kiribati was signed in Taipei by Natanaera Kirata, who is the Kiribati health minister.

His Taiwanese counterpart, Hou Sheng-mou, expressed his gratitude for Kiribati's continuous support for Taiwan's bid to join the World Health Organisation.

Mr Hou says Taiwan has made outstanding achievement in its public health, especially with women's and children's health care.

And he says he feels Taiwan should utilise its experience and practise medical diplomacy with its allies to reinforce diplomatic relations.
