There are conflicting views in Niue over whether to endorse uranium mining.

Two Australian companies are in a joint venture to do exploratory work on Niue which is believed to have a large uranium deposit.

The premier, Young Vivian, has come out in favour of the exploration which is expected to start this year.

But the health minister Fisa Pihigia has reservations.

"If that's the case here people will also voice their concern like myself. I don't want to jeopardise the health of the people here in Niue, particularly as I think it will affect our water."
