MSG secretariat close to being built

3:32 pm on 19 August 2005

A Melanesian Spearhead Group Secretariat is to be established in Port Vila in Vanuatu in two years time.

The chairman of the MSG interim secretariat, Johnny Koanapo, says this follows the five member countries honouring their pledges of 33,000 US dollars each for establishment of the MSG office in two years.

The Pacnews agency reports him as saying his interim body has worked closely with the Vanuatu government and the Council of Ministers has secured land for a secretariat.

He said the interim secretariat expects work on the building will start shortly.

Mr Koanapo says the interim secretariat has also been tasked to ensure that an appropriate financial control is established, particularly with the commercial banks.
