NZ MP says Tongan government has no support

6:13 pm on 19 August 2005

A New Zealand MP, who is in Tonga to meet members of the pro-democracy movement, says the government has almost no support.

Keith Locke says he has noticed it is not just the pro-democracy movement that is calling for a change in the political system now.

"The thing that impresses me is that the Tongan government has lost virtually all its social support. It doesn't have support of the civil servants, it doesn't have support of the church, the business community, the education establishment, it doesn't have any real support of substance."
