Solomons Red Cross to send team to assess floods in Guadalcanal

The Red Cross in Solomon Islands says it is organising a team to go and assess the flooding on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal.

Reports being sent to the National Disaster Management Council say four weeks of heavy rain has left dozens of people homeless and destroyed food crops.

A Red Cross Field Officer for Guadalcanal, Isaac Tagu, says the organisation could help people out with food, clothes and temporary housing.

He says they will send a team of three officers to the remote region shortly.

"We just received the report and according to those reports coming in we should do an assessment by a Red Cross person so we can help out. So we're just planning to do that assessment, this week."
