Power supply in PNG capital restored

4:10 pm on 25 August 2005

The power supply to the Papua New Guinea capital is back to normal after police served an interim injunction on landowners who had shut down the main hydropower station on Monday.

Port Moresby had to rely on limited supply from the Moitaka and Kanudi thermal power stations and the shutdown also affected water supply.

The National Security and Advisory Council director-general Joseph Assaigo told landowners that the government was not reneging on an agreement over compensation.

The National newspaper quotes Mr Assaigo as saying another group had filed claims for compensation and that the Lands Titles Commission was trying to identify the true landowners.
