Fiji's former opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, says the private sex acts of individuals are not the prime minister's business.
Radio Legend reports that Mr Beddoes was commenting on the prime minister's response to a High Court judgement which allows consensual gay sex in private.
In a case involving Australian tourist Thomas McCosker, Justice Gerard Winter ruled that several sections of Fiji's Penal Code are not consistent with provisions of the Bill of Rights in the Constitution and therefore invalid.
Following an outcry in Fiji, the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, said gay and lesbian sex must remain a crime and any man-made legislation that is inconsistent with God's law should be amended.
But Mr Beddoes says the prime minister must stop interfering with the personal choices of the people as gays and lesbians are first and foremost human beings entitled to the same rights and privileges as others.
Mr Beddoes says if the prime minister wants to interfere with the with personal choices of citizens, there would be serious problems ahead.
He says it is not anyone's place to judge whether some individuals should have lesser rights than others.
Mr Beddoes the High Court ruling is consistent with the Constitution and what people do in private is not the business of the prime minister or anyone else
