Logging 'out of control' at Solomons lagoon

8:28 am on 30 August 2005

Continuing logging on Vangunu Island in Solomon Islands is believed to be damaging the lagoon and natural habitat.

The Solomon Star reports resident Zurailo Kohese as saying the situation affecting the Marovo lagoon of Western Province is getting out of control.

Mr Kohese says the Elite Enterprise Company which is operating on the side of the island close to the lagoon has disturbed the ecosystem with the erosion of soil into the streams which has caused them to dry up.

He says the felling of the trees has also affected the natural vegetation and living species.

Mr Kohese predicts the island will be faced with dramatic impacts to the natural environment.

He attributes the quest for money as one of the factors leading to the acceptance of logging operation in the area.
