Pitcairn road still incomplete six months after project start

More than six months after engineers began a US$6.6 million project to improve infrastructure on Pitcairn Island, the territory's only road is yet to be fully paved.

Pitcairn Islanders used to carry all supplies up the hill on their backs and fuel was rolled up the hill in drums, before they got quad bikes to go up the muddy track.

The road up the so-called "Hill of Difficulty" hasn't yet been fully concreted.

British officials say the road's newly-erected safety barriers and further concreting may enable the hill to be renamed.
