The Papua New Guinea Lands Secretary says that some government land has been obtained illegally.

The National newspaper reports that Pepi Kimas was responding to a question by Public Accounts Committee member Dr Bob Danaya.

Mr Kimas said there had been some instances where land was acquired without following proper procedures.

He said in some cases, documents were prepared but were not paid off when the land was obtained.

In a supplementary question, Committee chairman and MP John Hickey asked if there were times when officers within the department illegally allocated land to the people.

Mr Kimas responded that there had been instances where land was leased out without sticking to proper procedures.
