Fiji Christian churches split on gay sex

2:40 pm on 2 September 2005

Fiji's two mainline Christian churches have expressed sharply differing views on homosexual sex in private.

While the Methodist Church has been agitating for gay sex in private to be criminalised, the Catholic Church has called for a display of humanity.

The Fiji Times quotes the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Petero Mataca, as saying church groups should show the loving, caring and understanding portrayed by Jesus Christ while on the earth.

Archbishop Mataca says it's not right to condemn others.

He says churches should understand these kinds of people and help them fulfill the purpose intended for them by their creator.

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, and the Methodist Church have been calling for the criminalisation of gay sex after the High Court ruled that such consensual activity in private was not criminal.

But the police commissioner, Andrew Hughes, says police will not waste their resources chasing homosexuals around to prosecute them.
