150 Fiji garment workers to lose jobs

7:03 pm on 7 September 2005

More than 150 Fiji garment workers are to lose their jobs as the ailing garment industry takes its toll on another factory.

Radio Legend quotes a spokesman for the Nadi-based WearSmart Textiles Limited as saying that due to the expiry of the United States quota the company is finding it difficult to compete low cost products from China.

Sachida Nath says this is threatening more jobs even though about half of their total workforce of 350 had already been laid off.

He says more workers will have to be laid off this month as the company is struggling to remain open.

Mr Nath says laid off workers were not given any redundancy payments but their dues were paid in full. END
