The biggest shopping mall in the Northern Mariana Islands has cut down on employee hours in anticipation of the economic impact of Japan Airlines' pullout from Saipan.

The Saipan Tribune newspaper reports DFS Galleria has been looking at areas to cut costs and will continue to find ways to mitigate expected losses.

Japan Airlines will stop regular, scheduled flights between Saipan and the cities of Tokyo and Osaka next month.

Research suggests the airline's pullout could cost the Northern Marianas more than 200 million US dollars a year.

The financial consultancy firm, economists DOT com, says more than 2,500 jobs are also likely to be lost.
