American Samoa has launched its first ever certification course for teachers of the Samoan language and culture.
Designed to hone the skills of teachers, the course would also earn credits at the American Samoa Community College for participants.
The head of the Teacher Certification Programme at the Department of Education Filemoni Lauilefue says it's essential.
"We feel that this is where the problem is, is in inadequate preparation for our teachers to teach Samoan language and culture."
He says they hope to have four courses, and train up to 400 teachers by May.
