Fiji prime minister heads to New York for UN special meeting

Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, has left for a special meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The summit of about 170 heads of states and governments, will meet to consider reforms of the UN and the attainment of development goals which the UN set in an earlier conference.

Fiji Live reports that Mr Qarase will address the summit on Friday.

The CEO in the PM's Office, Joji Kotobalavu, says the prime minister is expected to articulate Fiji's position on the various reforms.

And, he's also expected to indicate Fiji's position and commitment in areas such as peacekeeping and human rights.

Mr Qarase will hold consultations with other leaders while he's in New York.
