American Samoa has launched a new course in the Samoan language and culture for teachers.

The course will also enable participants to earn credits at the American Samoa Community College.

The assistant director for the Department of Education's Staff Development, Filemoni Lauilefue, says many teachers have lost touch with their Samoan traditions.

"We feel that this is where the problem is. Is in inadequate preparation for our teachers to teach Samoan language and culture. The first cycle will train about 100 teachers."

Filemoni Lauilefue says they have had to recruit staff from Samoa to teach the course.

He says they aim to train up to 400 teachers by May next year.
