State of calamity in French Polynesia after storms

7:39 pm on 15 September 2005

The French Polynesian government has declared a state of calamity for much of the territory after storms caused damage on many atolls.

Unseasonably heavy rain and strong winds flooded dozens of homes on Bora Bora and Raiatea and damaged some hotels.

At least eight airports in the Tuamotu archipelago were shut because of the flooding.

There have been no injuries.
