Strike by doctors in Samoa declared illegal

7:17 am on 17 September 2005

The Attorney General of Samoa, Brenda Heather Latu, has called the strike by government doctors illegal.

Mrs Latu says the refusal by doctors to undertake duties places them in an unfortunate position both legally and ethically.

She says the doctors are holding the public's health to ransom.

Mrs Latu says that the doctors haven't responded to any of the correspondence from government, and this includes the President of the Samoa Medical Association who was appointed to the Commission of Enquiry set up by government.

It's now a week since the doctors in Samoa walked off their jobs demanding better salaries and working conditions.
