Three major tropical storms getting closer to Hawaii

8:05 pm on 21 September 2005

Three major tropical storms are lying to the south east of the Hawaiian islands, and are predicted to move closer to the American state.

The US Navy joint typhoon warning centre based in Pearl Harbour in Oahu reports the closest, Hurricane Jova, is packing winds of up to 212 kilometres an hour.

Jova is forecast to pass north west of the Hawaii island chain.

Behind Jova, Tropical Storm Kenneth has formed, and trailing Kenneth, is Hurricane Max.
