French UMP leader Sarkozy expected to attend French Polynesian opposition congress

French Polynesia's main opposition party says the French interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, will attend the party's congress in Tahiti in November.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party made the announcement in Papeete following a meeting of parliamentarians of France's ruling UMP party in Evian that was also attended French Polynesia's member of the French senate, Gaston Flosse.

Mr Sarkozy succeeded President Jacques Chirac as UMP party leader last year.

The Taheoraa says it and the UMP confirmed their strong bond.

In July, Mr Sarkozy failed to be at New Caledonia's UMP congress after his attendance had been announced by Pierre Frogier, who became the territory's UMP leader at the gathering.
