Lawmakers in American Samoa have rejected a proposal that would have doubled the legal distance between homes and piggeries.
The aim of the bill was to help stop the spread of diseases caused by pigs, which have been identified as the main carrier of leptospirosis cases in the territory.
The bill would have required piggery owners to locate their pig pens a hundred feet from homes, which is double the distance under existing laws.
But what came out of the discussion on the bill is that many lawmakers had a special affinity for their pigs and didn't want them living further away from their homes.
