A major hydroponics farm is to be built just north of the Fiji capital Suva with production expected to start in January next year.
The Fiji Times says the farm is a joint venture between the state-owned Fiji Investment Corporation Limited, local fresh produce company Joe's Farm Limited and A & B Hydroponics of Australia.
The joint venture, to be known as City Farming Limited, will aim to reduce the import of fresh fruit and vegetables for the tourist and local market.
Fiji Investment Corporation chairman, Joe Mar, says there is a huge potential in the hydroponics industry due to the demand for top quality fruit and vegetables.
The hydroponics farm will ensure a constant supply throughout the year and yield eight times more than field farms.
