The Vanuatu Correctional Taskforce is nearing the end of phase two on improving and upgrading the conditions of its prisons.

The state of the country's prisons was put under the spotlight after a group of convicts staged an escape from jail in the north, complaining of the terrible conditions.

A Vanuatu Correctional Taskforce spokesperson, Maurice Kaloran, says one of the improvements in phase two will be to set up a market garden for the inmates so that they can be self relient.

"The new proposal is that at the new prison site there will be about 20 hectares of land, which will allow enough space for the prisoners to grow their own food and produce their own products."
