11:32 am on 5 October 2005

Fiji police have reported an alarming rise in the already high rates of suicides in the country.

Radio Fiji reports that already this week there have been five suicides and one case of attempted suicide.

So far this year 50 people have ended their lives and there have been

67 cases of attempted suicides, well up on figures for the same period last year.

Police spokeswomen Sylvia Low says they are shocked by the extreme measures people are taking because they are unable to deal with their problems.

She says the increasing frequency of suicides is worrying.
