Call for Forum to put Papua on summit agenda

There's a call for the Pacific Islands Forum to ensure that the issue of self determination for the indigenous people of Indonesia's Papua province is on the agenda at the leaders meeting in Port Moresby later this month.

John Kawowo of the Melanesian Solidarity National Facilitating Committee for a Free West Papua says they accept it is a delicate matter, but the Forum needs to confront issues such as the lack of human rights and democracy for the Melanesian population in Papua.

He says they also want the Forum to offer observer status to Papua.

Papua has featured in previous Forum summit communiqués but last year the province was ignored by the leaders.
