Niue Premier in NZ to discuss airline problems

11:19 am on 6 October 2005

Unconfirmed reports that Niue could lose its only airline service by Christmas have prompted talks between the Premier of Niue Young Vivian and New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mr Vivian is currently in Wellington and has confirmed that he has held talks with a number of airlines including Air New Zealand, Virgin Blue, Jet Connect, and Pacific Air.

However, while he wouldn't comment on which airline is likely to takeover until after Friday's meeting, he did confirm that talks will centre on the issue.

"Absolutely, the major issue is airlines. I came down here for two special reasons. One was the (launch of the) Niuean language programme. The other is for airlines."

Niue is currently serviced by Polynesian Airlines.
