The Cook Islands justice minister, Tangata Vavia, has confirmed that cabinet has approved the Unit Titles Bill for it to be tabled in parliament.

The bill is to pave the way for a new titleholding status for proprietors.

There is strong opposition to the bill outside parliament, with two petitions being circulated on Aitutaki and Rarotonga.

The Cook Islands News reports that according to the Aitutaki petition organiser Katapu Natua, a majority of people support the petition.

She says there have also been enquiries from Cook Islanders in New Zealand and Australia for setting up petitions there.
