Both crewmembers of the Janette Gay are injured and exhausted but an attempt by a merchant ship to rescue them yesterday had to be abandoned because it was unsafe.
The Rescue Mission controller says the conditions are atrocious and not expected to improve for a couple of days.
A New Zealand Air Force Orion dropped off emergency supplies yesterday but they were lost overboard and a second drop will be made around mid-morning.
Another ship is on its way to attempt a rescue but the earliest it will reach the Janette Gay is tomorrow.
