Tension high in Vanuatu village after man killed

7:07 pm on 11 October 2005

Vanuatu police investigators say tension is high in Toak Village on Ambrym Island after a villager was speared to death in a land dispute over the weekend.

Captain Terry Tulang says the victim had gone to another village to ask why the crops in his garden were harvested without his knowledge.

Seven villagers then reportedly attacked the man with stones, axes, spears and knives, killing him.

Police have stopped people moving from village to village because two thousand people from Toak are said to be demanding revenge.

Captain Tulang says if the alleged killers do not surrender voluntarily they will call for reinforcements.
