American Samoan Congressman returnd from Iraq

7:30 pm on 12 October 2005

The American Samoan member of the US Congress has returned from Iraq but failed to meet American Samoan reservists as he had requested.

Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin travelled with other Congress members that included the chairman of the Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations.

The group met top generals, with one in Mosul praising the American Samoan soldiers for their reliability and fearlessness.

For security reasons, the Iraq trip was kept secret.

US-affiliated territories in the Pacific provide a disproportionately large number of soldiers, with American Samoa having lost seven soldiers in the Iraq war.
