Transport operators in Fiji want higher freight charges and fares to compensate for increases in fuel prices this year.

The Fiji Times reports that the Fiji Shipowners Association plans to submit an application for a 25-percent increase in freight rates.

The association secretary, Leo Smith, says the freight rates have been the same for 18 years and three transport ministers have failed to do anything about it.
