Fiji Transparency International notes moves to stamp out corruption

4:50 pm on 19 October 2005

The chairman of Transparency International in Fiji, Hari Pal Singh, says the government is taking the necessary steps towards eradicating corruption.

Fiji has been listed in Transparency International's authoritative global index of corruption for the first time.

Out of 158 countries, Fiji ranks 55th alongside countries like Colombia and Bulgaria.

Mr Singh says Fiji's ranking is not that bad, but there is room for improvement.

"The fact that we are down in the middle of the range, or one third down compared to other countries, and the fact that we are down to the 30 to 40 percent range that should not make Fiji think 'hey we're quite good'. We should continue to fight to make Fiji have zero tolerance to corruption."
