Aitutaki to look at Cook Islands Unit Titles Act again

2:26 pm on 20 October 2005

A meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow in Aitutaki in the Cook Islands for the Island's Council, Mayor, Chiefs and MPs to discuss the Unit Titles Act again.

The bill was passed by parliament last week but only applies to Rarotonga.

However, there are signs that with new approval from locals, the act could soon be amended to also include Aitutaki.

The New Zealand-based Cook Islands property developer Tim Tepaki, who was behind the Unit Titles Bill, says he expects the act will be approved for Aitutaki.

He says locals are now angry that the petitioners who gathered signatures against the proposal in Rarotonga and Aitutaki misled people over the legislation.

"Well they lied about the fact that the Unit Titles Bill will lose your land for you. They printed it - they said that you will lose your land if the Unit Titles Bill comes in. That's just not true, because the Bill that was passed through parliament, if they bothered to actually read the Bill or consult the civic committee, says that it is"

inextricably linked to the 1915 Act.
