Solomon Islands gets two-year reprieve on debt repayments

International creditors have agreed to give Solomon Islands a two-year reprieve on debt repayments.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports the deal was reached after talks last week between Solomon Islands government and the Honiara Club group of creditors.

The Solomon Islands Planning and Aids Coordination Minister, Fred Fono, said the two-year moratorium on debt repayments would enable the government to broaden its economic base, and generate more revenue to repay its debts.

Mr Fono says no deal was reached on the issue of debt forgiveness.
