The French authorities in New Caledonia have deported an Australian man who was given a suspended jail sentence for assaulting border police.
The Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper says the man had been drinking on his flight from Brisbane to Noumea and on arrival assaulted and abused immigration staff.
He was subdued and held in a police cell to sober up.
The prosecution asked that he be imprisoned for 15 days but the judge gave him a suspended sentence and fined him.
The man was also ordered to pay one franc to each of the two border police he assaulted and then ordered to fly back to Australia.
