HIV and AIDS conference ends with call for free treatment

4:53 am on 29 October 2005

The first Pan-Pacific conference on HIV and AIDS has closed with a call for fully-funded testing and treatment in all countries in the region.

The conference was held in Auckland to discuss ways to bring about changes to peoples attitudes and perceptions about AIDS and HIV in the Pacific.

The director of the New Zealand AIDS foundation, Rachael Les Mesurier, says tests and medical treatment for people who may be HIV positive should be fully funded, and ought to be made available urgently.

She says funded testing, counselling and treatments are bare minimums, that need to be available across the Pacific.
