EU Pacific director heads to Solomons, Fiji

7:50 am on 31 October 2005

The European Commission's Director responsible for the Pacific is visiting Solomon Islands, and Fiji this week.

It's Anders Henriksson's first tour of the region; he spoke at the Forum leaders' summit in Papua New Guinea last week.

Mr Henriksson will hold discussions on the future of Fiji's sugar sector with some of the country's main sugar stakeholders.

The EU director will meet political leaders in Fiji and discussions will focus on the 2006 elections.

Mr Henriksson says the European Union and the the African Caribbean and Pacific group of countries should conclude negotiations on an Economic Partnership Agreement.

He says if the agreement can't be concluded, then investment, and possibly improved market access for sugar and fish, won't materialise.
