The opposition in French Polynesia has criticised President Oscar Temaru's response to the abduction of a new born child from a Papeete hospital.

Mr Temaru has made an appeal on television for the safe return of the baby after the child was taken by a woman who pretended to be a nurse.

He went on to say that he assured her of his protection which the opposition claims is a move to give her impunity.

The Tahoeraa Huiraatira says it is shocked at the suggestion that he pretends to be above the law in what is a kidnapping case.
