Two Solomon Island cabinet ministers are sacked and one resigns

9:30 pm on 8 November 2005

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza has sacked two of his cabinet members.

In a statement Sir Allan announced the sacking of Bernard Ghiro and Stephen Paeni.

The two ministers failed to turn up to Parliament which resulted in the delay of the passage of the Constitutional Amendment Bill allowing judges to continue to sit at the bench after they turn 60 years old.

Sir Allan says his cabinet members must be serious and diligent about their work as leaders of the country.

Asked recently about the attendance of members during Parliamentary sittings, Sir Allan said it was shameful the way some members ignored the most important part of their work.

The sackings follow the resignation of health minister, Benjamin Una, after his arrest by an anti-corruption taskforce.
