PNG university leadership sacked

2:41 pm on 15 November 2005

The Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Papua New Guinea have been sacked by order of the National Executive Council.

The NEC met on Friday and accepted a recommendation from a committee appointed to investigate the student protest in July, that Chancellor Andrew Yauieb and Vice-Chancellor Prof Leslie Eastcott should go.

The Higher Education Minister Don Polye, who announced the sackings yesterday, said that Registrar Vincent Malaibe and Bursar Edward Croake would be removed from the central administration.

Mr Polye said Mr Croake would be suspended pending an investigation into the university's finances.

The minister also said the 33-member University Council had been dissolved and would be replaced by a 10-member Interim Council.
