Striking social workers in French Polynesia agree to go back to work

Social workers in French Polynesia have ended their strike after fresh talks with the solidarity minister, Patricia Jennings.

The workers had taken to the streets to demand that an extra 51 social work jobs be created to fight the social ills in Tahiti.

But after the meeting, the workers agreed to return to their jobs, with the government saying it was looking into their grievances.

They said they were not seeking better pay or shorter working hours but wanted more staff to cope with problems such as an increase of violence, drug abuse and prostitution.
