Hawaii Senator backs plan to review American Samoa's status

5:30 pm on 17 November 2005

The US Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii says he wholeheartedly supports the plans to establish a Political Status Study Commission and the proposed call for a Constitution Convention for American Samoa.

However, the senior Democratic senator and long time friend of American Samoa has expressed concerns over the current form of political relationship between American Samoa and the US.

Mr Inouye has suggested introduction of legislation that will clearly define the current relationship between the US and American Samoa

He says this would force the issue and allow the Territory to present to Congress the form of political relationship it wishes to have.

Mr Inouye, however, has urged that whatever form of political association is put forward, that it truly and accurately represents the wishes of the people and not of just a few.
