The Head of the National Disaster Unit in Solomon Islands is at loss to explain why seven people reportedly travelled four days by small canoe in a desperate call for food.

The seven set sail in a nine-metre vaaka from the remote islamd of Anuta, to Nendo in Santa Cruz, to alert authorities their island is running out of food.

The Director of the National Disaster Unit, Loti Yates, says he's surprised to hear about the 420 kilometre journey.

"it is really amazing people from Anuta have used a canoe of some sort to travel from Anuta to Santa Cruz. Given the availability of high frequency radio on the island, i could only speculate that the radio must have broken down or something."

Mr Yates says provincial leaders will want to know what has caused any food shortage before a path of action can be decided.
