The three atolls of Tokelau have set a date for their referendum on an Act of Self Determination.

The vote will decide the New Zealand colony's political future and was reached after its political body, the General Fono, met this week.

The New Zealand adminsitrator for Tokelau, Neil Walter, who was at the meeting, says the referendum will be held in mid February.

"Sequentially in Apia and the three atolls, and that will be under United Nations supervision and that does give the people of Tokelau, at long last, a chance to say whether they want their sovereignty back, and what sort of relationship they want with New Zealand."
