Marianas governor promises smooth handover to successor

The outgoing governor of the Northern Mariana Islands, Juan Babauta, has promised a smooth handover of power to his successor, Benigno Fitial.

The Saipan Tribune newspaper reports Mr Babauta has urged Mr Fitial's incoming administration to push for a US$50 million budget for the Public School System.

Mr Babauta says the next administration should carry on reforms to the country's labour and immigration system.

He says this would help moves in the United States to treat products imported from affiliated islands the same as products imported from countries with which the US has entered into a free trade agreement.
