The Pacific Islands News Association Awards have been presented to end this year's conference in Tonga.

The two major awards were given to Pesi Fonua from Matangi Tonga and John Lamani from the Solomon Star.

Mr Fonua, who's also the chairman of the Tonga Media Council, was given a Media Freedom award for his work in covering the strict media legislation that was introduced but then dropped after a court ruled it to be unconstitutional.

He was also commended for his work in covering the recent civil servants strike.

Mr Lamani was given a Media Freedom award for his work in restoring the Solomon Star newspaper after the 2000 crisis.

The Radio Journalist of the year was awarded to Asinate Matakibau from the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, and the Young Radio Journalist of the year was presented to Mavis Gaunavou, also from FBCL.

No television awards were presented as no entrants met the criteria set out, although Geoffry Smith from Fiji TV was highly commended for his work.
