Tonga pro-democracy MP threatens to leave reform committee

2:26 pm on 22 November 2005

A Pro-Democracy MP in Tonga, Akilisi Pohiva, is threatening to withdraw from the Select Committee for Political Reform because he believes it is a waste of time.

His comments come after the Committee chair, Prince Tu'ipelehake, had expressed confidence that his work was progressing well and the royal family had committed its support to the process.

But Mr Pohiva says he is now thinking of leaving the committee.

"I feel it's a waste of time, you know, waste of resource, money, for the committee to work so hard and come out with a report and then government will refuse to do it."

Mr Pohiva says he will wait until next week's meeting before making a decision.

The committee is awaiting funding from the Commonwealth Secretariat before it begins a poll of the people to assess their opinions on political reform.
