Free education on the way in PNG - at the elementary level

2:33 pm on 23 November 2005

The Papua New Guinea ministry of education says there are plans to reintroduce free education at the elementary level.

A former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta has said, if he becomes leader again, providing free education for all will be a priority.

PNG has had free basic education in the past, but the current government had to abandon the policy because of a lack of resources.

The acting secretary of education, Joseph Pagelio, says the government has approved free education for the first three school years in the national education plan 2005 until 2014.

"That is approved in the national education plan 2005-2014. The plan is that elementary education will be free - meaning the government will have to provide funding for it."

Mr Pagalio says the government won't be able to afford free education for the secondary school levels.
